FILM STILL OF LUCKY DRAGONS

LUCKY DRAGONS

It would be probably be best to just come out with it and say that we’re in deep admiration of Lucky Dragons. Luke Fishbeck and Sarah Rara have very much their own contained and fantastic universe in the constellation of their collaboration. We’re fans.

But standing near Michael Hurley as he witnessed a Lucky Dragons performance at a David Wilson/ Ribbons festival on Angel Island in 2008, there was a certain, compelling juxtaposition. As part of the performance young folks (soaked in the gold waves of sunset) touched one another’s bodies to alter the sounds produced by Lucky Dragons’ elaborate electronic ricocheting instrument. Michael, however, stood aside, eventually wandering away from the scene toward the area where he would play later that evening. Despite the disparity between Michael’s music and the music of Lucky Dragons, both are about bringing you close, taking you from the individual experiences contained inside your own skin and connecting to an underlying need for human experiences of joy and love. That Michael and Lucky Dragons were both invited to the same space, and have been since, says much about the audiences that are taking in the work, and the interest in emotions and thoughts provoked by music as much as its particular sound.

Lucky Dragons also create video and visual work as well as their installations and musical happenings. Check them out at www.luckydragons.org, but really, go find a performance to see them.
