PROTEIN MONSTER

As participants in the contemporary culture of eatable dangers, it is easy to regard the Protein Monster with sympathetic eyes. Poor dude. He ate a big sack of poison sugar and dragged his body out into the reeds to collapse and expire. Perhaps this explains why he was never heard of again—not in another Hurley song, or in a graphic novel, or even on an album cover. Poor guy. Which is why animator Drew Christie had to inquire with Michael what the fellow might resemble before attempting to draw him for an animated sequence to accompany “Eyes Eyes.” Turns out he was from the brain of Snock’s good friend Robin Remaily, though Michael was able to offer a few important details—the body of a whistle-pig and horns, Minotaur-style. So it goes. In the meantime, various projects have stemmed from the tragic story of the Protein Monster, including the honey-inspired Poison Sugar Cookbook Susannah made for Lisa last birthday season.
